Bike Racing

Hi Sidra,
This post is mostly for me to make an admission of guilt that some people might find silly.  First I should admit that I have the beginnings of 'little league parent syndrome' with regards to your athletic accomplishments.  I have to admit that I will live vicariously through your sports careers and whatever shows on the outside will be the result of intense pride on the inside.  I hope that I don't get in your way or guide unwisely because of my exuberance.
Some readers may have wondered about this summers Bike Derby.  It was your third one and you had won the other two.  This time you were 5th and that surprised your mom and I.  You can see in the video what happened.  You were 2nd among those not using training wheels and the first girl without training wheels.  But the fault lies with me.
Earlier in the summer your mom tried to convince me to convince you to get on the bigger bike that was waiting for you.  I opposed the move because I felt you were comfortable with the smaller bike because you could easily put your feet down almost like you did on the runner bike.  She said your legs weren't stretching out enough at the bottom of the pedal stroke.  She was right.
We succeeded in convincing you to try the big one about a week after the bike derby.  With the slightly longer cranks and taller wheels you can see the difference in speed just by watching the videos.  I think you would have given that boy a run for his money if we'd tried the big machine sooner.
All in all, you were ok with your result.  That's good because you can't expect to win everything, no matter how good you are.
I showed you some video of "kiddie cross" races and you seem interested in that.  We are thinking about taking you to one of those in the fall.
The picture here is from our trip to the zoo with friends Oscar (boy) and Shayla (mom).  You were feeding the Lorakeets some nectar.  It's usually one of the funnest parts of a Zoo trip.
Apologies to readers about the placement of the videos and picture.  I'm just not geeky enough to get them aligned.  It looks fine on the composition page but totally different when published.

Artistry

Hi Sidra,

This post is mainly to show off some of  your artwork  You have some skills in this area.  Some of the pictures shown here show some of your needlework that came home from school.  You are pretty good at it and very proud of your skills.  Your mom hung them on the wall while I was away.  When I came home the two of you were showing them off to me and you said "You should put that on my blog, dad."  You also did a still life drawing of a vase of flowers.   We were pretty astounded at the quality of the work.  It seems light years ahead of what you did just six months ago.

I think you know what the blog is because you hear your mom and I talking about it and I have showed it to you in order to show you which videos and pictures are on it.  After you said that my mind did a fast forward to the day when you want your own chronicle of your exploits and thoughts.  That will be ok but I'm keeping this one.  It has taken a lot of energy and thought to bring these stories on line but I've relished each contribution.

I should explain that the flowers in the vase is your still life subject for your drawing.  I am pretty amazed that you can do that at 4½ years old.

The bike derby is next week!

Weekend Vacation

Hi Sidra,

Rolling the Sunriver Trails
We just had a quick weekend at Sunriver.  The weather wasn't very good but we had a good time anyway.  In spite of snow falling and snow on the deck of the pool you still got in three good swim sessions.  The water was warmer than the air but not that warm.  You spent some time learning some things from your mom and made some good advances on your swimming skill.

We also went to the High Desert Museum in search of your favorite raptor, the world's fastest creature, the Peregrine Falcon.  We really enjoyed our visit and if your sister was a little older we could have stayed there for several hours.  We did find some interesting exhibits and saw some other animals but not the falcon.  We didn't know until we got there that it would be performing in a show.  But you had to go on a hike to where the show was and you had to be there at the right time and it just didn't come together for us.  You handled it really well,  I think I whined about it more than you did.  I hope we will be able to return there with better information and see the falcon perform.  It has become your favorite from watching PBS kids Wild Kratts show.

Two skinned knees
We also got to go on a little ride on the bike paths at Sunriver.  It was the first time we got to go out together and just enjoy the ride without having to stress about cars and safety.  As you can see from the picture and video it wasn't very warm but we got to cruise along and look at ducks and geese and an otter and a dalmatian.

The other picture is of your skinned up knees.  That happened a few weeks ago.  It was one of the few nice spring days we've had.  I was under the car changing the oil and sat up just as you were running down the sidewalk from the neighbor's house.  I was just thinking what a joyous moment it was as you ran along with your hair flying up behind you. Then I saw your shoe catch a crack in the sidewalk and how your bare knees were your next earthbound contact.  In an instant the joy had disappeared.  I scooped you up and brought you in the house for first aid.  The picture was taken a couple of days later.  It was about a week before you were back to normal.

You have a big event coming up this week.  Your tumbling class at school will be performing at the school open house.  Your mom will be the coach.  You and your class mates have been working hard to get ready for the performance.

Young Frankenstien

Hi Sidra,

Well maybe the title to the post is a bit of an exaggeration. You haven't actually been trying to make a monster but you have been doing some scientific experiments and learning a lot about science.

I guess the first of these exploits was your science project for school. You did a little demonstration for your classmates. You didn't exactly create the experiment but you performed it for them and explained to them what was happening. The activity was one that was in one of your National Geographic For Kids magazines. It is called the Dancing Raisins. Your mom says that you are the only kid your age that did one for the class. The others who did a project were all older. We didn't get to see you do it at school so we had you demonstrate for us at home for the video. The vinegar and baking soda react to make carbon dioxide bubbles which stick to the raisins and carry them to the surface. There the bubbles open up and the raisins return to the bottom.

Your mom got you a pop up book showing some other fun experiments we could do. The first one we tried is similar to the dancing raisins because it uses vinegar and baking soda, too. It's a volcano. We put the bottle containing the liquid inside a box folded to look like a mountain. And we used food coloring to make the 'lava' look red. We tried to video that also but on our first attempt we used a bottle that was too big causing our 'eruption' to be too small. On the second take you put the baking soda in while I had my back turned and wasn't ready with the camera. You say it was bigger and redder than the first try but we don't have pictures of it.

You have an interest in the solar system, too. You learned some things about it at school and I've heard you say that the earth goes around the sun and the seasons happen because the earth is tilted either towards or away from the sun. So your mom got you big puzzle of the solar system. You are posing with it in one of the pictures here. We put the puzzle together and then in an odd combination of your interests you bring out your Barbies and they have a solar system party. As always, I'm allowed to use one of the boy dolls. In this case I have made the Beast a comet rider while one of the Barbies is attempting to surf the Milky Way.

On Passover you exchanged your interest in the Afikomen for a solar system gift. It was a set of the planets to hang from the ceiling. They glow in the dark. I hung them in your room as if the overhead light was the sun. I doubt the light is the right size, but the planets are all proportionally distant from the rim of the light fixture. In order to make it authentic and have the inner four planets to appear on different orbits Neptune and Pluto are out in the hall. One of the pictures here shows the inner 5 planets.

You pick up some of your scientific rhetoric from a PBS show you watch online. It's called Wild Krats and you're a little smitten with a couple of the regular cast members. While eating lunch last week you mentioned something about 'arm regeneration.' I questioned you and learned it was in reference to Octopi. My parents were here last night for dinner and we asked you what it meant. You said "When a predator bites off one of the Octopus' tentacles then it grows back."

I don't really have an explanation for the picture of you on the exercise bike. I guess you're just being acrobatic. The picture of you and your mom was taken at your front row seats at the Go Dog Go performance.

Checking In

Hi Sidra,

The last post was too long ago and it's time for an update. It's not like you haven't been doing anything. We haven't got as much video on you as your little sis lately. It's not that you're not interesting it's just that she's been doing things she's never done more often than you have lately. One thing that you've been able to do is to show a wider range of emotions in your facial expressions. We did a little photo session with you showing off that skill. You aren't really selling the mean look in these shots. You seem to be having too much fun to wipe the smile off. Your mom actually wants to get you in an acting class to help you expose that talent.

One of the pictures shows a current version of how you write your name. You're getting pretty good but you still will sometimes do the S backwards. In the other we had an unexpected snow event this past week and you had your first tandem sled ride with your sister. The video is just a little dancing you did to Kidz Bop yesterday. It doesn't really hold a candle to what you did at the state fair last summer.

An interesting story about you is a what we did last weekend. The weather was bad and we were getting weary of being cooped up in the house. Mom was up at the mountain doing some snowboarding so it was me and you two girls. I devised a short trip to do some errands and made the last stop the local McDonalds. Having a meal there was not on the agenda. We went so you two could play in the indoor play area there. You have grown out of needing to have me come with you up into the tubes and down the slide. That's good because I needed to stay with your sister who's not big enough to go up in the tubes. You went right in and began doing lap after lap on the slide. In the process you met Isabella who told me she was almost 5 and was would have been willing to be Shira's babysitter if you hadn't distracted her. Soon, you had a group of 4 'girly girls' as you called them. I could hear you most of the time chatting and playing with your little posse who took up your 'girly girl' label without blinking. The play area for the under 3 toddlers was a little crowded and Shira was a little intimidated by the kids who were bigger and faster than her so she wasn't having a terrific time. When it came time to leave you handled it very well. You didn't whine about it but insisted on saying goodbye to your new pals. So, you yelled up the tubes "Bye Girly Girls, I have to go." Isabella's mom was nearby and got a pretty good laugh about that.

We've decided not to push skiing for you this winter. You haven't shown that much interest in it and it seems like the long trip up to the mountain puts some pressure on us to get something good out of it. Ice skating is a good alternative since it requires comfort in 'gliding' the same way skiing does. There is an ice rink in Portland but that seems like a big trip, too. In Gresham there is Skate World, a roller rink.

We've gone to Skate World a couple of times with mixed results. The first time I approached it the way I would if I were going alone or with an adult. Let's get in there and get our skates on and start skating! Bad idea. I realized after that we should have gone in and watched for a while and maybe get skates after we'd seen everything and checked out the best place to put them on. So the first time you had a meltdown and fell and hit your cheek on a bench in the off rink area. It ended with you saying you wanted to go home and me saying we could go then if you promised to come back another time.

One of the pictures here is related to the Skate World Saga. You were doing some drawing and coloring and wanted company. You convinced me to draw. So I drew you with skates on and the speaker playing music. You looked at it and said, "You need to draw you next to me." So I added myself. Then you said "you need to draw the bench that I fell on" so I added that. Some of you will recognize the Red Sox shirt I was wearing.

The next time we went to the rink we did the slow approach. We went in and watched skaters for a while, looked at the DJs booth, noticed the air hockey and other arcade games and saw a girl about your age dressed as a princess, wearing a tiarra. You were the one who suggested we get our skates and the one who suggested we go off the carpet and on to the rink. We only did one short stint on the rink from one exit to the next but there were no tears so it was an improvement.

Recently your school had a special day on the 100th day of school. You were supposed to bring 100 of something. We got you a little spiral notebook with 100 pages in it. I numbered the pages and also 100 little round stickers. Then you went through each page and put the matching sticker on each page. The 100th day was also a day of tumbling and teacher Carol (your mom) had the students line up and count 100 steps around the gym.

Sometimes I write words on your easel and have you read them. Usually I choose a group of words that rhyme and have three letters. Sometimes it's sight words. I have been trying a few four letter words that rhyme with the smaller ones and have a blended sound at the beginning. You're getting much better at that.

We had some interesting conversations about what you remember a while ago. I remember writing here that I thought you were getting to the point where you would remember significant things the rest of your life. But we talked about a couple of things I thought you might remember and you didn't. It surprised me because you have a really good memory. The topic that came up was horses and I told you that you had ridden one and you didn't know anything about it. So I showed you some pictures and a video and you watched them as if it had never happened. The same with the time you steered the big cruise boat your mom and I had an anniversary dinner on. Both of those events happened within a month of each other and you were a little more than 2½ then.

rule of 4

Hi Sidra,

4 year old stats:
40in tall
35 lbs.
head 52cm

I wrote those stats a few days ago and I'm noticing the 40in height. We were at a swimming pool today that had a measuring device since you had to be 42in to go on the slide. According to that you were just 39in. I guess the main thing for our measure chart on the wall of your room is knowing how much you are growing.

Picture captions- 1) At your birthday party with your other guests. The hired entertainment, Nanna Banana is performing/engaging you and your friends. Your little sister really wants to be part of it isn't brave enough to get too close. 2) Zoo Lights!! 3) Your birthday party with your cousin Rachel and friend Isa (Isabella). Rachel is painting your hand. Isa is a friend from school. She's a couple of months older than you. 4) At Sunriver the night you opened gifts from the family, the day before your real birthday. Your uncle Frog is reading you one of your birthday cards while your uncle David looks on. 5) You are checking out the gift that made all the adults envious. A really cool Red Sox hoody. 6) You're playing in the snow at Sunriver. 7) This is what you did an awful lot of at Sunriver. Play with your new gift, the Leapster. By the time you read this it will be a relic on the scrap heap. Now, it's an almost cutting edge electronic toy that also teaches you a few things. You weren't feeling too sharp on most of the trip and this was a great occupier for someone who needed to save her energy. If you look close enough you can see that your cheeks are rosy- from your low grade fever.

Your birthday party was fun. The theme was "The Little Mermaid." There was entertainment and your cousin did some hand painting. Nanna Banana, the entertainer also painted a nose and whiskers on all the guests. Actually, you wanted the whiskers but not the nose. There was one incident that put a damper on the celebration. One of the activities was like 'pin the tail on the donkey' but was really 'put the crown on Ariel.' You were the first to try it and you did ok, but didn't reach high enough. It turned out that your crown was third closest to where it should be and you were upset. You went and stood in the corner until I came over and talked to you. You were upset that you didn't win. I told you that you can't win all the time and that third is pretty good and there will be darn happy you were 3rd instead of 10th. I don't think it sunk in too well but you did come out for the rest of the party. However, we now have Ariel on the wall at home and you frequently place her crown on her in the right spot, without a blindfold.

Another cool gift you got was from your Grandma. There's a story behind it. At her house she has a figurine with her birthstone on it. It's a girl in a dress holding a flower with the stone in the center of the flower. You've always been drawn to it and have wanted to take it home. Grandma resisted that and instead got you one of your own with your birthstone in it. Hers is blue, yours is white.

Just before the winter vacation ended you and I went to see Zoo Lights. It was really fun. I didn't have to prompt by saying 'wow, look at that' or anything because you were saying that. We went on the train, had hot chocolate and I didn't have to carry you very much. It was New Years Eve and I think that helped keep the crowd smaller. At one point we were walking on a path that was fenced on both sides and the fences were filled with lights and the trees above were all lit. You said, "We're surrounded by lights!"

Here's the videos uncle Ben took of us skating.

independence

Hi Sidra,

You've had some significant events happen in the last month or so. You had your school winter program, your neighbor Jo Jo had a birthday party and you are on a family vacation in Sunriver with your east coast relatives. In the meantime you are starting to show some real independence.

In your school program you were a key part of several songs or poems. If you remember, last year in your first program you got overwhelmed by the size of the audience and left the stage to sit with your mom and tante Debbie after about a minute of the show. This time you lasted the whole show although you didn't sing much. We knew you knew all the words but you seemed to be watching the others do most of the singing. I'm only commenting about what I saw on the short video clip i've seen. I didn't get to go to the program as it was in the morning on a day I had to work. I am still waiting to see the full video we purchased. You were very cute when you spoke to me on the phone later that day, asking if I was 'bummed' that I wasn't able to be there. Of course I said yes. One of the songs you sang was called 'Channuka is here.' Your school meets in a church and is pretty Christian based but they asked your mom to talk to your class about Channuka and they included some songs in the program.

You are starting to do some more things on your own. You're getting better at doing bathroom stuff on your own. I wouldn't say you're exactly flying solo there but you're getting better. You are very interested in your clothing choices and can almost completely dress yourself. You haven't really made any attempts to do your own hair yet, but that's pretty complicated. At least I think it is. And I would really like you to do more of your own tooth brushing. That's something we should work on.

Another thing you've taken upon yourself is answering the phone. It works pretty well when one of your parents is nearby but you did handle one call on your own pretty well. I was upstairs lying down with your sister helping her get to sleep for her nap. I heard the phone ring but made no attempt to get it. You were working on your Playmobil wedding set downstairs right by the phone. So you picked it up and had a short conversation. You said that Carol wasn't there and a couple of other things and hung up. When I came down about 10 minutes later I asked you about it. You said that Dennis had called. I was skeptical. Your mom knows 2 people named Dennis but it seemed unlikely that either would be calling then. I checked the phone and found that American Tire had called. So after a couple more questions you said that Dennis said 'the wheels are ready.' So you got the message complete. Another time you answered before I could reach it and it was your doctor's office. You gave me the phone when they asked you for a parent. Anyway, we probably need to get you to be a little less exuberant about answering so that you don't end up talking to someone you shouldn't.

You had a good time at your neighbor Jo Jo's birthday party. It was at a pizza parlor that had a fun play area. You went down the slide many times, rode the carousel and played in the balls. You didn't like the pipe maze too much. You followed your friend Logan into it when you first arrived at the play area. You soon came back out the way you went in without following him down the slide to exit. I think you get scared in those things sometimes. Later, the other kids at the party started a game of Duck, Duck, Goose. You joined in and did pretty well for being the youngest there.

We've been at Sunriver for a couple of days but you haven't got to do much except go swimming once. You have been coughing a lot and have a low grade fever. So, we haven't tried ice skating or skiing yet. You did go out with your cousin Rachel and uncle Ben to build a snowman and do a little sledding.

Well, it's now a few days later and we did go ice skating. You did very well for your first time on skates. You were very comfortable with 'the glide,' the notion that you can move pretty fast without moving your feet. You were able to pick up one foot and glide on the other while I was holding you. Near the end of the session I convinced you to do the last 5 or 6 feet by yourself. Uncle Ben has videos we can post here later.

Next up is your birthday party. You will be four years old in three days. You have 8 friends joining you at your party.

Love, aba.

This was originally written on December 26 but I was waiting to get home to find some photos to go with the post.

Suessical

Hi Sidra,

Last night you and I had a date. We went to a musical called "Suessical" that is based on a few Dr. Suess stories. We had a great time. It was staged by a local high school and they did a pretty good job with it. The costumes were very colorful and well done. The acting, singing and dancing was all quite good. Our seats were terrific. You clapped after every number and would have joined in the standing ovation at the final curtain if you knew what that meant. I had to pick you up so you could see past the forest of adults who were standing and applauding.

I have to give credit to your mom for suggesting this date. She noticed a review of the show in the local paper and we planned it right away. I bought the tickets online and we picked them up at the Will Call table. When we got there I assumed that it was festival seating. Who would have thought that a high school theater would have reserved seating? So I had chosen what I thought was a pretty good spot on the aisle because I thought it would be easier for you to see past the adults that way. I was bummed when someone came and told us we were in there seats. But it was good news! Our seats were in the sixth row, dead center. You sat on my lap for most of the show so you could be a little higher.

Afterward we stopped at Cold Stone for ice cream. There we found the evenings only flaw: they were out of chocolate! You settled for peppermint chocolate and I had cheesecake.

We had a little conflict while we were getting dressed and it resolved in a way that pleased and surprised me. You and your mom had already picked out the dress you were going to wear. When we went upstairs I my task was only to help you pick some tights to go with it. Now everyone knows I'm no fashionista but I was pretty sure I was right on this choice. You wanted to wear pink tights. You had two pairs of pink ones in the drawer but they didn't look right. I wanted you to wear the black ones. You really wanted pink. I said look, neither of these is the same pink as the pink in the dress but the black does match the dress. I went into my room to change my clothes and you came in a moment later and asked me to help you put on the black tights.

I did not expect that at all. You are strong willed like your mother and I and I thought we would really butt heads over that. Apparently you saw the logic in my argument and were willing to act on it over the emotional attachment you had to the pink. I'm hoping that this portends some other future grounded decisions in your future. But I'm not holding my breath!

Happy Halloween!

Hi Sidra,

It is actually a few weeks since Halloween. I've been pretty busy with our Homecoming/Spirit week at school and volunteering for a couple of local candidates in the recent election. We did have fun on Halloween, though.
You were dressed as Dorothy of Kansas (Wizard of Oz character) and I dressed as the Tin Man. Your mom dressed as Glenda the good witch for a costume party the week before Halloween. We got your costume several weeks before Halloween but had to hide it from you after a couple of days because you kept putting it on and taking it off. The sequins were all falling off, too. You chose the costume after seeing it in a Target catalog that came in the Sunday paper. We even had ruby slippers for you. You and I went Trick or Treating around the neighborhood for and hour or so. You started like you'd just been given a shot of adrenaline and then eventually slowed down and even said you were ready to go home.
I was a little disappointed with your etiquette. You weren't that good about saying thank you and weren't that patient in letting your companion from next door, Jo-Jo, ring the doorbell or knock his share of the time. I will have to remember to have a little training session with you about what I expect from you in that regard.
In the video you and I sing a line from "Over the Rainbow" and I do little bit of the Tin Man's song. The camera person can be heard laughing over my song. I know I'm not a good singer but I did it for you, not for my own ego.
There's also a picture of you here with your friend Logan at the pumpkin patch. We had a good time there, too. The two of you went with me through the hay bale maze (basically a twisty dark tunnel with a low ceiling). Both of you were ready to turn back as soon as we got in far enough that no light from the entrance could be seen. I said we were in too deep and had to keep going and you guys held hands and boosted each others courage until we got out. It was a little more challenging than last year because I forgot to bring a headlamp and we only had the light of a cell phone to go on.
There's also a picture of you picking apples with Grandpa. You know, he is always willing to play with you and even gets down on his knees to get in the game. On this trip he even let you ride him like a horse!
The last picture is from our last family bike ride. We went this way: I pulled Shira in the trailer, mom rode her bike and you rode behind her on the trail a bike. Anyway, I thought it was cool how your hair is standing up as you go down the slide.

Channuka is coming.........

State Fair

a
Hi Sidra

We went to the state fair two nights ago and had an interesting time. There were some animals and some carnival rides involved. But perhaps the most entertaining to we parents was the visit to the Lunchables booth. You had the chance to try a few activities there and you declined to wait in line to visit the school cool bus or climb the pyramid. However, you decided to step on the stage and put on this show for us.

Afterward, you said "I'm glad you got video of that. I bet Mike can't match those moves. That day at the lake house I was taking it easy on him. Anyone can roll on a couch but let's see him get in front of a lunchables bus with tights on and pick up a hula hoop." I don't know, but it sounds like you threw down a gauntlet there. If there is a duel, I'll root for you.

Vacation 4

hi sidra,

after returning from maine there was a beach day and and a couple of fountain days in Boston. Your sister and I stayed home from the beach deciding that there wasn't much for a crawler to get out of the beach. By all accounts you used your beach time to the fullest extent. You played in the sand, played in the water, even tried a boogie board and didn't stop until you got in the car to come home where you conked out in another nap.

At the frog pond, you had two sessions in the water and one each in the playground and the carousel. You did a ride on the swan boats to rest, then posed for pictures with the make way for ducklings statues.

On another day we went to the Greenway to see the big hammock. Along the way we shopped at the Croc store, had lunch at Quincy Market and played in yet another fountain. You ended up getting sprayed in the face at pretty close range and didn't like it too much. We forgot about it by having a cart wheel somersault session on the grass.

So I think we've detailed most of the vacation activities. We all agreed that it was a really great vacation and we're excited to go back again another summer.

Vacation 3

Hi Sidra,

After a couple of days in Brookline we headed to Long Lake in Maine as guests of your uncle David's family. We stayed right on the lake with the Thompsens, Tante Debbie and later uncle Ben. As it turns out you said that this was your favorite part of the vacation. In our conversation it was a little tough to suss out what exactly was your favorite thing. You seemed settled on the general term, 'the lake.' We tried to ask you if it was the swimming, the tubing, the kayaking, the jumping off the dock or the trampoline. You liked all those things (although you were sure that the kayaking wasn't at the top of the list) but curiously left Dance Party off the list-sorry Mike and Sara!
You were a great lake guest, pouring all your energy into each activity. We stayed for about 5 days and at least twice you were collapsed into a nap by mid afternoon. Once you slept about 2 hours on a bony deck chair.
You also got along quite well with your cousin Grace and your new friend Mike who agreed to play dolls with you. He did also engage you in a dance party. You worked him pretty hard and he had to draw Sara into the contest so he could rest a little.
Your mom got a chance to show off for you on our last day at the lake. Uncle David showed up pretty early because of the calm water to offer her a chance at water skiing. She took the chance to show you she could get up on one ski and made it look pretty easy.

The hard part was getting the video while holding Shira.

Vacation 2

Hi Sidra,

Our first day in Boston was sort of a recovery day. We just hung out in Brookline and visited with our hosts. It was a long trip and there just wasn't any energy for getting out to do something that day.

On our second day we went into Boston and visited the Children's Museum. It is about 10 times better than the one in Portland. There is a lot more things to do and they are better quality activities, too. You got to do a climbing wall, the bubble room, some gravity games and the video shows you doing something in the Kid Power area. You are cranking the cycle to make the sign move up above you. You did a lot of other stuff but I missed a lot of it because I was hanging out with Shira in the infant area.

We were still just getting warmed up in the fun department. Next, what you said was your favorite part of the vacation.

Vacation 1

Hi Sidra,
we just got back from a great vacation in the Northeast. There are lot's of things to tell about so I will do a few posts to recount the fun we had. First, I am just reporting that you were excited to wear your new Red Sox dress today. You actually would have worn it yesterday but we talked you out of wearing it for our long trip home. When your uncle Ben and I picked it out we thought it might fit you better next summer but it looks like you'll be wearing it well during the final months of the 2010 season. By the way, it nearly took force to get you to wear the cap with it for the picture. While it isn't an actual Red Sox hat it does match the outfit and you look very cute with it.

This morning I questioned you about your favorite part of the vacation. In the next post I'll write about what you said.

More Summer Stuff

Hi Sidra,

Here I thought that during the summer I would be able to write a new blog post every week. Well, with both of you wanting attention it's hard to sit down to any quiet task for more than a minute or two. Many's the email that took 5 attempts to complete.

Here's some photos of your work on your dry erase easel. These are actually about a month and a half old. The way you draw yourself is a little different now. I took these pictures because it was the first time I'd seen you draw yourself. I thought it would be fun to compare them to later drawings. In the one that shows the whole family I drew the other people and you drew yourself. The one which has only you in the picture you did without any advice from me. In the one with the family you asked me about or I suggested some embellishments.

In the fourth photo I am hoping that our adult readers can suggest a caption without any background. I find the picture quite amusing and I think it would be interesting to see what others can say about what is happening there.

In the video, you and I are on the tilt a whirl ride at Oaks Park. I held the camera facing you while we rode. I have to explain that while it seems like you were pretty edgy about being on the ride that footage is only of the first 20 seconds or so when the operator was just warming us up. It was lucky that I chose to shut off and stow the camera right when I did because the operator tripled the speed just then. We both got off the ride wobbly from all the spinning. That was the most intense ride we went on. One other one that got you a little worked up was the balloon ride which took us up pretty high and spun, but not like the tilt a whirl.

We're getting ready to visit our Massachusetts family. You are pretty fired up about the trip. We are a little worried about how two little girls will handle a cross country plane ride. I'm sure there will be a lot to tell about the trip.
